Where Did All the Showtime Dancers Go?

Last Saturday, dancers from the It's Showtime collective gathered in a sun-filled Greenpoint film studio to teach a class in FlexN, a street dance style pioneered on New York City's streets, and sometimes its subways. […] Saturday before the class, they were performing at the Kingsland Wildflowers Festival, celebrating wildflower fields on the roofs of buildings. Dozens of dancers have now participated in It's Showtime, a project of the nonprofit Dancing in the Streets, which in 2015 was the beneficiary of de Blasio's fund to get Showtime dancers off the subway and into the "schools, stage, studio, and the screen."

Karley Wasaff with Bleu Pablo

Walking into Growing Takes Time, the space immediately feels alive with movement, sound, and a kind of structured play. There’s a balance between choreography and unpredictability where nothing feels fully fixed, but everything still feels intentional. The work blends contemporary dance, immersive theater, and the whimsical unpredictability of New York’s experimental gallery scene. Audiences can expect a beautiful wildflower rooftop run by Noo Arts, gorgeous sunset city views, live gameplay, unexpected interaction, absurd humor, and a strange little world where collective problem-solving becomes choreography.

Kick Off Summer with “Growing Takes Time,” An Immersive Rooftop Dance Party at Kingsland Wildflowers

Noo Arts felt like a natural home for Growing Takes Time because the space already embodies so much of what the work is about: the intersection of art and environment. Their wildflower rooftop garden creates this feeling of stepping into a hidden world above the city, which aligns perfectly with the immersive universe of the piece. I’ve also loved consistently collaborating with Tribe & Vibe Collection and intertwining their Hydroponic Tower Gardens and community-centered mission into the immersive experience. The show already has a legacy of helping activate these community spaces while encouraging more spaces to invest in sustainable growing systems.
